Working the night shift

For build v7

It is 4:46 AM. One notification will not swipe away. You clear shifts to open apps, you read what those apps say for themselves, and at the end of every chapter you name the one that is lying. Six chapters, thirty shifts, twelve suspects.

The loop

  1. Clear a shift. Handle the stream of notifications with the right gesture for each one.
  2. Collect evidence. Some cards drop leads. They are filed against the app they point at.
  3. Open the app. Every few shifts a new app unlocks. Go read its statements.
  4. Name the liar. When a chapter's shifts are done, the verdict screen asks its question.

Six notification types

Each card tells you what it wants in its own corner. Read before you move.

CardGestureWhat it is
AdCloudSwipe leftOrdinary junk. Trash it.
LeadsSwipe rightEvidence. Trash it by mistake and the thread is gone.
ClockTapTap the required number of times to silence the alarm.
Echo NotesHoldHold until it finishes repeating itself.
Software UpdateWait, then swipe leftMasked. Its real face only shows after a moment.
Red AnomalyContainBox it before it spreads to the next card.

There are also VIP entries and bundles, which follow the swipe-right and tap rules respectively. When a shift is masked or blacked out, the card text is hidden and you have to work from what little is left.

Power, focus and card life

Combos matter. Consecutive clean handling raises your score and returns more power. A single mistake resets the run, so on hard shifts it is often better to read for an extra second than to guess.

Twenty-two shift types

Standard shifts teach the gestures. After that the floor starts changing the rules: Rush shortens card life, Low Power starts you drained, Blackout hides the card text, Masked turns everything into an update, Mirror flips your controls, Flawless allows almost no misses, Endurance simply refuses to end, and Contain and Red Tide flood you with anomalies. Boss shifts close each chapter.

Reading testimony

Open the lockscreen to see the twelve apps. Unlocked ones can be opened and questioned. Each has a set of statements, and you can put a question to it from the prompts at the bottom. Statements are not answers — they are what a suspect chose to say.

Tag each app yourself: trusted, lying or infected. The tag is only your working theory and can be changed any time. Once a chapter is closed correctly, the two apps in it are confirmed, and the tag stops being a guess.

The evidence board

Every lead you pull off the floor is filed against the app it points at, so the library shows you who has been named the most, which statements contradict each other, and which sector each piece came from. Apps you have not unlocked yet still show the clues aimed at them, sealed until you get that far.

Verdicts, and getting one wrong

A chapter will not let you past its verdict. Name a suspect and the game tells you whether the chapter closes.

This is deliberate. If a wrong guess were free you would simply try all the names, and the case would stop being a case.

The Tuning Bay

Cache coins and chips earned from shifts unlock six pieces of equipment. They are progression items only and cannot be bought.

EquipmentEffect
Dense BatteryMore starting power, and clean handling returns more.
Focus CoreMore focus, softer mistake penalties, one extra allowed miss on Flawless.
Anomaly ScannerMasks slip sooner and the containment zone widens.
Payout ProtocolLarger reward per shift.
Preread QueueLonger card life, so you get more reading time.
Cache RadarRicher chapter caches and quest rewards.

A hint for chapter one

Two apps open first: Clock, the time witness, and Browser, the ad door. One of them keeps insisting the noise was ordinary. Check the signature on the ads you have been trashing, then check whether anybody's history is missing exactly one minute.
